Using a laser: Simply set the rod on a benchmark elevation and slide the laser detector to the bullseye on the rod. Then adjust the height of the rod so the detector (and bullseye) are on grade with the laser beam and tighten the rod clamp. Finally move around the jobsite and the rod will show you the true elevation as well as the cut/fill measurement.
 Using a level: Simply set the rod on a benchmark elevation, sight the rod and adjust the height of the rod so that the bullseye is level with the instrument crosshairs. Then tighten the rod clamp and move around the jobsite and the rod will show you the true elevation as well as the cut/fill measurement.
